Full scale testing
of composite structures and des
ign
details is still the ultimate way of providing confidence in a design,
and is often a certification requirement. AEL is experienced in the
design and setup of such tests.
Simpler tests may be carried out internally, but where more
specialised equipment is required, AEL has the contacts to out-source
with minimum hassle.
De
sign
of efficient and durable adhesively bonded joints
is key to the cost effective exploitation of composite materials, yet
many designers still rely on overly simplified rules of thumb, plus
trial and error.
Particularly when fatigue loading is a factor, this can become a very
expensive approach.
AEL has
recognised this problem and developed a methodical approach to the
design of efficient bonded joints, encompassing both strength of
materials and fracture mechanics considerations.
As such, static, creep, and fatigue strength are all covered.
Many of the tests conducted for ourmaterials database
were undertaken to provide the
necessary data.
Specially
created design tools complete the picture by enabling rapid design of
joints to this advanced formula.
Parametric design tools
- When evaluatio
n of
the effects of various design parameters is required, AEL has great
experience in the creation of both spreadsheet and FE based parametric
design tools.
An investment
in bespoke tools for your project can yield considerable downstream
benefits and greatly increase overall cost-effectiveness.

Engineering design & analysis
- We can conduct design and structural analysis exercises at any level,
from concept evaluation through to final detailed design.
We always work closely with our customers to ensure that we
understand their priorities, and take care to provide relevant feedback
in a timely manner.
Our
standard design tools include 3D CAD modelling and
drafting facilities (we can import / export all common file exchange
formats).
ANSYS
and ALGOR finite element software packages are
complemented by the ability of our highly qualified engineers to perform
more traditional analyses / hand calculations as appropriate - we do not
believe in performing any task for its own sake and always propose an
approach based on the most cost-effective method.
AEL has developed a range of capabilities, services and tools designed to assure a high level of confidence in our output whilst minimising the time and investment required for completion of your project.
The AEL Materials Database
is for the benefit of all our customers, and along with your
specification is the starting point for most projects.
One of the most time-consuming activities during the
development of a composite structure is the generation of relevant
materials data. We have
sought to cut out what can be a frustrating delay by the development of
design data for a number of highly cost-effective
composite materials (Carbon/epoxy, Glass/epoxy, and structural
adhesive). Provision of
your loads now enables the generation of design allowables in minutes
rather than months. As many
of our projects are now marine / renewable energy orientated, we have
placed great emphasis on the understanding of fatigue performance and
the effects of seawater immersion.
In the event that your project requires the testing of
non-standard materials, AEL has the experience and contacts to
streamline the testing process.

Tooling Design and prepreg cutting
-
AEL can turn designs into real parts with ease and repeatability thanks
to our specialised CAM software and CNC machinery.
Our
router
permits the rapid and cost-effective creation of mould tools both large
and small, whilst our
10m x
2m prepreg cutting machine
helps ensure that composite parts are manufactured to a consistently
high standard much more quickly than would otherwise be possible.
